Malcolm John

Ministry Deacon

What are my responsibilities? I am “The person who looks after the ministry within the fellowship at Small Heath Baptist Church. I support the Ministry team, who assist people who come out for prayer on a Sunday morning, as part of the main service. The needs of the congregation or people who come forward for prayer, can of course be varied. But each member of the team have to use discernment and spiritual guidance when faced with individuals who may have complex needs.
The Ministry Deacon has responsibility for continually seeking improvements for the ministry team so that they can be as effective as possible, organising individual/group activity training sessions, organising team meetings, and generally be on hand to listen to concerns raised by any member of the team.
Individual ministry team members and members of the congregation, were involved with prayer sessions, when we were seeking a Pastor for SHBC. Hosted by myself, prayer times would take place on a Saturday morning, where the opportunity was given to anyone who wanted to attend the church to pray for a new pastor could do so in a quiet time of prayer and fellowship. This prayer session format was then opened up to the whole church, in an inclusive way, taking place on a Sunday morning, until we were blessed with a new pastor.
I am also the musical director and look after the music ministry at SHBC. From a very young age music has always been a passion for me, and I get a strong sense of purpose when playing guitar, or bass with fellow SHBC musicians and the worship team. I love the fact that music engages worship which enhances our communication with God.
I am married to Pauline, and our children are Alexander and Melody ages 12, and 7.

How long have I been a SHBC member?  I have been a member of SHBC for almost 4 years now.

What I love about SHBC?  I love the warmth of the fellowship, and the welcoming nature of its people.

Thanks May and Pauline for a really good Family Service on Sunday 23rd October; it was informative and challenging, included young and older members of the congregation, the worship was great, and included an excellent (if shortened!) message from Pastor Richard on the subject of OUR dreams. And the dedication of Delson and Ester’s son, James Feliciano Perreirra too - brilliant!

I have been going to this church my whole life and it is such a blessing to me! I am so blessed to be able to attend Grace and be a part of the amazing things that God is doing.

I found this community at a time in my life when I was really hurting. I walked in the doors, and felt like I had just come home! I was welcomed with warmth, and encouragement, and friendship.
